Episode Two – Get The Look

Resin Bound Paving (picture Ref. DSC_0635)

The Colquhoun family had a perfectly usable, but rather drab and unattractive concrete path and slab patio. We wanted to transform this and the perfect way to do this without removing the existing hard surfaces was to use resin bound paving.

Resin bound paving is a fantastic surface as it is semi-permeable – meaning that water drains through it and it is available in a huge range of colours.

Addagrip Terraco and Long Rake Spar supplied us with two different coloured aggregates and the resin for this surfacing. We used Terrabase  ‘Rustic Beach’ for most of the area. Within the dining area, we used Terrabase ‘Rustic Oak’ to demarcate where the table and chairs sit – just like you would use a rug indoors. This not only highlights the area, but breaking up the uniformity of one colour, adds interest.

The ‘Rustic’ range can be applied on top of a level existing surface, or, unusually, it can be applied straight onto a compacted sub base. This makes it the perfect resin bound surfacing for garden paths, patios and driveways.

The Addagrip Terraco approved installer, Resin Bonded Surfacing, travelled all the way from Yorkshire and worked tirelessly all day to get this done in time and we are very grateful for their involvement and fabulous handiwork.

Terrabase Rustic paving costs from £65.00 per square metre for areas in excess of 50 sqm. For more information on resin bound paving, please go to http://www.addagrip.co.uk

The Potting Shed (Picture Ref. DSC_0599)

Sheila had always wanted a potting shed to do her hanging baskets in and we found the perfect one. We chose The Potting Shed by HSP Garden Buildings, because it is a beautiful building for Sheila to not only potter around in, but to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of her new garden.

It also fits in perfectly with our romantic ‘New England’ style of garden and the Orchestral Steel paint colour really complimented the building and the colour palette of the garden.

All of the beautiful building designs at HSP Garden Buidings are produced at their Suffolk based workshops by skilled craftsmen to exacting standards. They combine modern machinery with excellent construction traditions to ensure that your new garden building is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also well crafted with every detail considered.

The term “Shed” is loosely applied to the Potting Shed and this is more of a magnificent summerhouse. The attention to detail and the quality of this potting shed would suit any surroundings.

The building was fitted with a plywood floor, lead roof and double door, brass ironmongery, toughened glass, and double skin panels.

We kitted it out with a fabulous potting bench, seats, apple crate storage – everything Sheila could possibly want.

The Potting Shed measures 3m x 2.5m and retails from £7570 + VAT and it is also available in a smaller size. For more information on this and other wonderful garden buildings, go to www.hspgardenbuildings.com

Greenhouse (Picture Ref. DSC_0616)

Sheila wanted a greenhouse to grow tomatoes in and the team had the challenge of finding one which not only would match the white timber ‘New England’ theme, but also one which was small.

We struck gold when we found the Waltons Evesham Wooden Greenhouse. This greenhouse is ideal for smaller gardens as it measures only 6’ wode by 4’ deep, providing a great growing area for flowers, plants and veggies throughout the year!

We requested white paintwork, although treated wood is also available. The tilting windows are pretty and also provide ventilation and the door is hinged.

It is clad in 12mm tongue & groove cladding, is UV protected and has shatterproof styrene glazing.

The Evesham 6’ x 4’ greenhouse retails at £279.99 (including VAT and delivery). For more information, go to http://www.waltons.co.uk/4×6-waltons-evesham-wooden-greenhouse

Table and Chairs (Picture Ref. DSC_0609)

We wanted a white slatted table and chairs to complete the ‘New England’ style outdoor entertaining area in the Colquhoun’s garden. David Domoney was determined to make it look even better than The Ritz!

The beautiful timber ÄNGSÖ set from IKEA with its’ generous sized (100 x 205cm)rectangular table and 6 chairs with armrests was the perfect match. Handily, the chairs can be stacked, which helps to save space.

To make the pine outdoor furniture as durable and resistant to decay as possible they produce it from heartwood, which is the dense inner portion of the tree trunk. For added durability and so you can enjoy the natural expression of the wood, the furniture has been pre-treated with several layers of semi-transparent wood stain.

We completed the stunning entertainment area, with a matching parasol and a wonderful range of tableware from IKEA. A matching two seater ÄNGSÖ storage bench, perfect for storing garden tools or plant pots was placed further down the path.

The ÄNGSÖ 6 seater table and chairs retails at £450 , the ÄNGSÖ storage bench retails at £105 and the matching white BAGGÖN / SVARTÖ parasol with base retails at £80.

Arches (Picture Ref. DSC_0597), Slatted Screens (Picture Ref. DSC_0678) and Picket Fencing (Picture Ref. DSC_0641)

A New England style garden wouldn’t be complete without white wooden picket fencing and arches. We selected Grange Fencing to supply them as they had the perfect range of both of these products to complete the look.

The Grange Tulip Palisade panel has a lovely tulip flower shape crafted on the top. This fencing is the perfect product to mark out your boundries, the morticed posts with the same crafted top completed a really attractive look.  They also detracted from the holey hedge behind and provided the perfect foil to plant in front of. The retail price per panel is £22.99, each Panel is 90cm high and 1.8 metres long.

The Elite Granville arches have a classical look as well as being strong and robust. With square trellis sides which are ideal for climbing plants, the timber is pressure treated to ensure protection and longevity in use. It is made from planed timber,  supplied flat packed and was easy to assemble. The retail price per arch is £189.99, assembled dimensions are 2.7m h x 1.27m w x 0.55m d

We were stuck with an unsightly oil tank in the garden and decided to screen it from view. The Grange Contemporary Fence Panel was perfect to use as it has clean lines and is a really attractive fence. The slats obscure the oil tank behind, but also add another dimension to the fencing. It is a  heavyweight fence panel that combines contemporary design with strength, making this the perfect fence for the modern garden. This pressure treated panel is made using horizontal boards with planed rounder slats on both sides of the panel, offering extra privacy.

They are ideals for screening or for boundaries. The panel measures 1.8 x 1.8metres and retails at £99.99

For more information on the arches, slatted screen and picket fence including where to buy them, please go to www.grangefen.co.uk

All of the fencing and arches come in natural wood, which is treated. Because we wanted all of the timber in white, we used Royal Exterior Wood Finish in Snow by Protek. For more information, go to http://www.protekwoodstain.co.uk/
